 "Super Match"
« Thread Started on Apr 26, 2012, 1:59pm »

Instead of calling it a "super match" couldn't we just call it a challenge? I mean to me when I hear super match immediatly I think of people who are in the elite class such as Devon Larratt, Earl Wilson, Ryan Espy, John Brzenk, Travis Bagent ect. Those guys are elite and very few can do what these guys have done for years now. I mean I'm not in that elite class so from now on if I want to do battle against someone I'll just say that I want to challenge them. What do you guys think?

I agree, but "supermatch" is the term that was most associated with the one-on-one format when it started to become more popular around 2003-2005. It will be hard to get everyone to make the switch over to "challenge match" even though this may be a more accurate description.

"Supermatch" also sounds cooler.

I see where you're coming from Conrad, but I must ask what is it that makes an armwrestler a part of the "Elite Class" if you don't belong to it??? I mean if you & Joe Gould were to go to war in a best 3 out of 5 and it not be declared a "Supermatch" I think it would definatly be an understatement. IMO. Maybe it's just me but I think you guys sell yourself wayyyy too short!!! That includes you too Joe!!! Again JMO from a rook's aspect

I guess it could be put like this, just ask yourself if you would go out of your way and pay to see some of these matches. You don't have to answer here but ask yourself that question in front of the mirror and you'll see what I mean, and be honest now. There have been many supermatches in the past such as when Crazy George pulled that swede Anderson I beleive his name was and when Devon pulled Ron Bath at the Mike Goulds, now those were supermatches that I would pay to see. I'm not trying to take the word out of play but I just wanted to give the word a little more boost for what it represents. There have been great match-ups in the past but to compare myself for example to a world class individual is not possible at this time so I'm not trying to sell myself short its just that I'm not at that level yet.

You make a good point Conrad. Although, I might pay to see Hugh Brodie unleash the fury on Steve "Adding Godzilla to my target deck" Murray.

We went through this in the thread when me and Chris M had our match and the word Challenge lasted about a week on here its just a habit. Aw should focus on other bad habits like over worked hooks and floppy wrists. :)

from a fan/follower point of view super matches are the best thing ever happened to armwrestling after the standing style aw almost replaced sitting awing.

nonarmwrestling audience will not be attracted even to give close attention to the double elimination system. At the maximum they may ask who came first ? and what happened to mr.X ? to whom he lost ?

So in my opinion super matches are going to be the real aw show. They cannot be named as challenge matches.

The term 'super' in 'super match' is like set and superset in gym and not like star and super star. Just my thoughts.

I'm really not sure Conrad.

Maksim asked me to do the commentary for Rogers and I've committed to that. It depends on Maksim and the guys from Rogers if they think it's ok that I compete as well. I will respect whatever Maksim decides on this.
