Next Up - Eastern Ontario Championships

The first circuit sanctioned event of the 2010-2011 OAA season is just around the corner, taking place on November 20th in Kingston. This is the first event that will count for points in the Puller of the Year, Team of the Year, and Ontario’s Strongest Region races. With the changes that have been implemented regarding the Team and Region races, I’m curious to see how things will play out this season.

Joe and I are planning a number of exciting things for the day, including:

A cash left-hand class for anyone up to 187 lbs. This is a separate double elimination class that will be run prior to the regular tournament. The cost to participate in this class is $20, but you must also pull in the regular tournament. There will be cash prizes for the top 3 - $125 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third.

There will also be a double elimination left-hand overall class following the tournament. The top three finishers in each left hand class will qualify to pull in the overall. The first place winner will get $125, second place will get $75, and third place will get $50.

And, there will be a 3 out of 5 left hand challenge match between Steve Noonan and Chris MacPherson.

The top three in every regular class will win nice trophies, plus there will also be special awards for Best Match of the Day, Most Sportsmanlike Competitor, Most Wins, and Furthest Travelled.

Don’t miss what is sure to be a great day of armwrestling!

I believe that circuit tournaments should be closed to residents of Ontario only, like our provincial championships. The main purpose of circuit tournaments is to score points towards puller and team of the year. Pullers from outside Ontario could affect the placings. Simply skipping non-residents and awarding the points to residents is not good enough. Round robin and money tournaments have no place at a circuit tournaments. JMO

Roughly 30% of last years entries for the eastern ont championships came from Quebec! Might be tough convincing the promoter on that one Rob. I love the fact that Eric and Joe threw in some $$ classes. It adds intensity and will bring in more entries. Much like when joe's armmelters had a open mens right for $$.... It's fun to watch!!!

Round robin, money, challenge matches... BRING EM ON!!

Anything that makes the event better, brings in more money for the promoters or gets more people to the event is a GREAT thing.

Mr. Gobby, bring 50 pullers from Quebec if you can.

It might be tough to get a large amount to Kingston. There is also a tournament that day in Quebec.

i have to agree with Mr. Hancock. even though the rankin system is mostly for fun, it still makes you feel good to see your name up there. if you go to an ontario championship that is prodominantly quebec pullers, you stand a higher chance of being beat out by someone from outside providence and thus not knowing how you actually compare to the rest of the ontarion pullers. i have nothin but respect for the quebec pullers, ive seen them dominate many events. i just feel it flaws the ranking system, even if said rankings are just for fun. now, going against everything i just said, i was wondering if the Tyler Wilkinson Daylan Thomas challenge match would be happening at this event since it didnt happen at ribfest.

Sweet!! Great suggestion. Hey Chris and Rob, can you guys think of any other ways to diminish the growth of the sport in order to glorify the ego's of poor to mediocre pullers?? Just curious... Sounds like u two are really on to something here.

If this was our Provincials I would agree, but for a circuit sanctioned tournament, the more the merrier. Would love to see some east coast fellows, some western fellows, and even some south of the border. You are not going to get any better pulling the same guys. Also from a promoter point of view, the more there are, the better tournament. I love it when there are 20 guys in a category. Great pulling!!!! Much nicer when new blood comes to me, then me having to travel 10 hours to find new and different arms. But I will still travel anyway. Really hope the Harley happens this year!!!!

I see why some people figure that it should be exclusive to Ontarians, since it's "Eastern Ontario Championships". The problem is with the name. The event is not comparable to "Ont Championships" which is, of course, provincials, with people battling to be the best of Ontario... For the East Ont, the name simply underlines the location of the venue, and is not to be taken literally; otherwise we would have to take it a step further and say it's only open to residents of eastern Ontario and no other regions. Can you imagine- man, that would be a shitty turnout.

People that have been around a while will remember when Ontario had tournaments every weekend. No supermatches and no money was offered, just trophies. Every event was huge and stacked with our best pullers. The OAA exists to promote armwrestling in Ontario and help its members advance in the sport. Ontario has won more team titles at nationals than any other province in Canada. I dare say Ontario has won more team titles at nationals than all the other provinces put together! Ontario has also produced more WAF champions than any other province. Ontario already offers money tournaments like the Mike gould Classic, The Arm Melter events and the tournament that Mark Zalepa just had last weekend. These tournaments are open for anyone in the world to attend. Not everyone in the sport wants to compete at such an elite level. If everyone wanted money tournaments then the Quebec Enduro Open tournament would've had a greater number of entries. If the current OAA executive continues to promote open money tournaments as Ontario circuits then I suggest scrapping the circuit altogether!
