Refereeing at provincials
« Thread Started on Dec 8, 2008, 7:07pm » I just returned from the worlds and I refed all 4 days. I noticed something about our Canadians that I think may be corrected by being more strick with the rules at smaller tournaments.
At the world level the refs only use about 15 key words, because the other countries don't all speak the language. I would like to see the same rules aplied in the same maner as you would see at the world level.
The provincials is the event that prepares you for the Nationals and the Nationals is the event that prepares you for the worlds, so why not enforce the rules as though you are competing at an event that is taking you to the next level.
In short I would like to I would like to see our refereeing enforced to the max at these 2 events.
Anyone disagree... Joey

I don't totally agree. Nationals for sure should be strict as possible. Provincials and nationals has a big gap between them in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I am all for strict reffing and actually enjoy Joey's reffing alot as a puller with several years experience. The provincials is reffed stricter than other tournaments during the year as it is in my opinion. I think it deters new blood from competing if it is too strict at a lower level. Weigh ins as well falls into this category. I speak from my own personal experience when I was new. My second OAA tournament (provincials)was run by Joey in Gravenhurst I think 02 and I did not compete for a long time after that. I weighed 165.4lbs and he would not let me in and I was very new, sweat off the extra .4 in the truck, ran around the block and after I was drained, got whooped went home. Jason Dubray, and Paul Belluz were d**n lucky I had to cut the extra .4lbs or they would have been in a world of hurt! ;D I don't think I pulled a tournament for 2 years after. Also, I run a yearly tournament in Teeswater. 75% of the guys/girls that enter are not armwrestlers. If I reffed very strictly, it would be a circus and very little armwrestling would get done, almost like running a kids tourny, and it would discourage these new guys alot. Some of the guys that have been in the sport along time forget what it is like to be new. This slows the flow of new blood into the sport in my opinion. Guys that get hooked up with a team have a big advantage here. I think the reffs should use their discretion a bit. If it is a guy that is not new, throw the rule book at him if you think you should! If he is new, keep it clean but don't sweat the small stuff! None of these new guys are at nationals anyway.

REFFING AT THE WORLDS WAS TOO STRICT I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WAS IT TO HARD TO SEE A MATCH DETERMINED BUY A PIN ? I WATCHED EVERY MATCH ON ARMTV AND THE OTHER SITE THAT WAS SHOWING AND I WANTED TO SHOOT MYSELF! WHAT IS THE ARGUMENT? OH THEY JUST HAVE TO LEARN TO FOLLOW THE RULES??? LISTEN THESE GUY'S ARE AT THE WORLDS AND ACCORDING TO MANY THAT MAKES THEM THE BEST IN THE WORLD!! LEARN WHAT? MANY MATCHES WERE ENDED IN MY OPINION WITH THE WEAKER ARMRESTLER ADVANCING!! OBVIOUS AND CLEAR ADVANTAGE FOULS NEED TO BE CALLED BUT SOME OF THE CALL CSI MEMBERS COULDN'T SEE THEM WITH A MICROSCOPE! PLEASE DON'T KILL THE SPORT BUY OVER ANALYZING IT ALLOW NATURAL FLOW AND JUDGE ACCORDINGLY! IF THIS SPORT GETS ANY MORE ANAL WE WILL ALL HAVE TO SIGN UP WITH ENEMAS UP ARE ARSES!!

I think the reffing at the World is too strick. I lost a World championsip on fouls that you couldn' even see and no advantage gained. Many matches are won with no pulling involved. It used to be great with some leaniancy. No advantage gained then let them go. People want to see a pull not just two guys at a table and one winning with no action. On another note, if that is how the reffing is going to be then we might have to make it a bit more strict, but try not to kill the sport.
