Question...do static holds actually make u stronger or is it a mere test of strength? Do you not need range of motion to build strength?

Yes they make you stronger. No you do NOT need full ROM to build strength.

I started to notice big strength gains when I started to do lots of static holds several years ago.

John there is a lot of research on the web about this. It's very easily found too, along with programs (not specific to AW but they still may be useful)

A static Hold (an isometric contraction of a the muscle) can produce as good, if not greater strength and size then a Isotonic contraction.
