I’ve put together the top four or five names that have come up as possible recipients for this year’s annual awards. Unless several people feel strongly that someone else should be added to the lists, this is how the ballot will look like at Provincials.

Rookie of the Year

Most Improved Puller
Bill Cameron Joel Goodsell John Milne Janet Riehle Guy Windover

Mark Zalepa for Promoter of the Year. He's been running tournaments since long before I started in this sport, and I remember a time when he was mc'ing most of the OAA events. More recently, he's been putting on the high-caliber round-robin tournaments. While the men's tournament was a lot of fun, I think the women's round-robin tournament (and don't forget the one coming up, as well) has done more for women's armwrestling than any other event in North America in recent memory. In my opinion, it's time he was recognized for his contributions to armwrestling in Ontario.

I think what Mark is doing is great for women's armwrestling, but this portion of his event does little for Ontario armwrestling as a whole. Most of his female competitors are non Canadian. I think it's great that he's leading the world in women's tournaments but I'm not sure that it should be the basis for him winning Promoter of the Year.
I know Joe has been winning this award year after year but he's the one doing the most for Ontario armwrestling (IMO). He's established a professional league that keeps getting bigger and bigger. He's spent good money on quality belts and pays both his winners and challengers. I'd contend that this is what most of the armwrestling world wants and we've got it right here in Ontario.
It will be interesting how the voting goes on many of the categories. Each person has their own perception and value attached to what is important to them and I'm sure the voting will reflect that.

I haven't seen enough of Bill Cameron to cast my vote in his direction for Most Improved. It's hard for me to judge Janet as well as she doesn't get many chances to compete with her peers. This is not to say that they aren't deserving or that they haven't improved a great deal but just that it's difficult given their respective circumstances.
Mr. Windover has shown up time after time and continues to take names. His improvement is more measurable and consistent in my opinion. He has made great strides in the past year and I think should be one of the favorites to win this award.
Mr. Goodsell is much the same as Windover. Consistent and measurable against top notch competition, in both amateur and professional tournaments. He's closing the gap on the top pullers in the country and I know they hear his footsteps.
It will be interesting on how the voting goes.
