It was a lot of fun at the SuperShow yesterday. Thank you to everyone who came to help run the event, compete in it, or simply show to show their support. It was very much appreciated.
Although I missed some of the action, these were some of the things that stick out in my mind:
The novice division:
About a dozen people competed in this division, and it was the first armwrestling tournament experience for I believe 10 of these pullers. I know a few of them were from Ottawa, so hopefully I can convince them to come out to a High Hooker practice.
The women's division:
Jodi managed to win her second tournament in a row!
The MLA supermatches:
Tim vs. Devon -- WOW! Unbelievable matches. Although Tim's street cred was already high, I'm sure now it's even higher! I'm happy that Devon was able to find a way to squeak out the win. He said after the match that his arm has never been so torn up after armwrestling. Hopefully he heals up quickly.
Dan vs. Gary -- An incredible display of strength on the part of Dan. Gary looked like he had the wind taken out of his sails after the first match, and didn't seem to try anything different until match 4. However, even after establishing a better position, Dan was still able to pull through! I don't see anyone slowing Dan down at the Nationals in the 242 class.
Thank you Ian for making these matches happen!
The Ironman:
Tim Bresnan and the Grippler were last minute entries into this event. They, as well as Mike Gould, all tired each other out in the first couple of matches and decided to withdraw after round 2. This undoubtedly changed the course of the tournament.
Also he withdrew, the Grippler had two great wins over Mike and Rick Heidebrecht. His arm being far from being 100% healthy, I'd say these two wins were pretty impressive.
A lot of people had great days:
Allen Ford got a huge win over Rick Heidebrecht. I was extremely impressed by this. In the rematch, Rick won, but both matches were huge battles!
Shea Dickie had a good day, getting wins over several pullers who are highly ranked in higher weight classes.
I was impressed to see how high Heintje Bergeron placed, considering this was a right hand tournament. Chris Gobby also placed very high, with big wins over much heavier opponents.
Jake Charles got wins over Hasan Monfils and Pierre Madison. Not bad for a teenager!
Daylan Thomas racked up a number of good wins, establishing himself as one of the guys to look out for on July 7th in Prescott!
Joel Goodsell got a win over Dan Bellefeuille. HUGE win.
Janek Kwias made me work for the win, and he had a lot of other good matches.
Shea Dickie and I tied for the most matches, with 14 apiece.
John and Devon manned the OAA booth all day today (Sunday), and John tells me the booth benefitted from a lot of attention. I think this was a great way to promote the sport.
_________
I'm looking for feedback on this event. Is quintuple elimination overkill? Some have suggested that it may discourage some people from attended, as the event is expected to take a toll on the arm.
The SuperShow is really interested in keeping armwrestling going at this event, and would even prefer if we could do a two-day event. Do you think we gain something from having a tournament as part of the SuperShow? I am fairly confident that there will be armwrestling at the SuperShow next year, but I'm not sure what type of tournament will be put on. There doesn't seem to be enough interest in an Ironman-type event (based on this year's participation). Does anyone have ideas of what type of event they'd like to see there?
