I can officially announce that the following youth classes have been approved by OAA Executive majority vote, to be offered at the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Ontario Provincial Championships:
12 years and under:
Mixed - 0-60 lbs Mixed - 61-85 lbs Mixed - 86-110 lbs Mixed - 111+ lbs
13+ years:
Boys - 0-130 lbs Boys - 131-160lbs Boys - 161+ lbs Girls – 0-130 lbs Girls - 131+ lbs
Max age is 18 the based on the year of birth (so anyone born in 1995 or later can compete in the youth classes at the 2013 Provincials), to match what is done at Nationals. Right and left will be offered for all classes.
As this is an increase of eight classes over the ten classes offered at previous Provincials, the OAA will cover the additional cost of awards for 2013, up to $200.

6 month's ago 3 different groups bid for the right to host the Provincials, the bids were baised on past provincial, results and categories. There was no mention of adding classes to the event or changing the provincials in any way. It is 6 month's to provincials and I have half of my open class awards purchased and all of the other awards purchased for the rest of the categories.
It was nice having this message board conversation regarding the youth classes but someone should have at least returned my phone calls to discuss this before making a decision.
I don't believe that this matter can be arbitrarily determined without bringing it to the AGM and voted on by the members. That way the people voting on next years provincials will no what they are voting on. By the posts on the message board this is far from being resolved and not everyone believes that 18 categories for 20 kids is the right thing to do.
I for one do not

You are right that there was no mention of adding classes to the 2013 Provincials at the time bids were placed, which is why the OAA will cover the additional cost for the extra classes in 2013.
However, a motion was passed during the AGM to adopt set youth classes for Provincials. We mentioned that those interested in taking part in the discussion were encouraged to share their thoughts. This is what the discussion on the message board over the past couple of months has been about. There is clearly a lot of support for the newly approved classes.
The classes were not arbitrarily set, there have been suggestions and refinements and the members of the Executive who were voted in by the OAA general membership have given their support to the classes. This will not be brought to a vote at the next AGM, as it was made clear that a decision would be made following the discussions over the summer/fall.
The issue is resolved.

The kids classes have been an issue for quite some time, and I don't see the point in waiting another year to institute these improved classes that have majority support. Kids grow up fast. And as I mentioned, the OAA will cover the cost of awards for the additional 8 classes, so there is no burden on the promoter.

I agree guy, this topic is far from being resolved. I think it's a great idea to rethink the kids classes and not rush into any decisions. A vote at the AGM with all members in attendance is the fairest thing and that will give everyone a chance to speak before a vote. If everyone continues to send me their kids weight and age we will be able to set up classes for this year and maybe be able to follow them for the next year.

I think something may have been missed. I refer your attention to the first post of this thread.

Eric offered masters classes at the 2009 provincials (no vote at AGM) when he was the tournament director and nobody complained. These classes have never been very full, I watched Guy Windover win the 220 left and right hand unchallenged and nobody complained. The same classes were offered the following year and are still being offered. Joey has even added an additional masters class to next years provincials (no vote at AGM) and nobody complained. I paid a $30 entry fee for last years provincial masters classes and got the same medal as the kids that paid a $5 entry and nobody complained. I try not to get involved in OAA politics but it seems crazy to me if the OAA contributes $500 to the MGC and little or nothing to it's own provincial championships? Creating new set classes for youth was voted on at last years AGM. The new classes have been discussed and chosen, so why all the complaining? These issues need to be dealt with now, not later. Almost everyone agrees the new set classes are much more fair and will bring more entries. I feel so strongly about the new classes that I would personally sponsor the total cost of the new youth classes.
