Since the discussion that started on the message board several weeks ago, members of the OAA Executive have debated the possibility adjusting the OAA season so that the major annual events would not be concentrated within a short time period. This debate revealed that there was unanimous support to adjust the OAA schedule to move the Provincial Championships to November, as of 2014. The tentative date for the 2014 Provincials is November 8th, 2014.
This change will allow sufficient space between the big events:
The OAA season runs from one Provincial Championship to the following Provincial Championship, so starting with the 2014/15 season it will be from November to November. Competing in the 2014 Provincials will qualify you to attend the 2015 Nationals, which take place over the May long weekend.
This adjustment means that 2013/14 will see an extended OAA season, from May 2013 to November 2014. At this point we are unsure how many circuit sanctioned events will be run during this period. If there are more than five, then the performances from the top 5 events will count towards the Puller of the Year and Team of the Year races.
One issue that still needs to be resolved is what criteria to use to qualify pullers for the 2014 Nationals. Participation at Provincials has traditionally been the way to qualify, and there are no plans to change this going forward. However, as the 2014 Provincials will occur after the 2014 Nationals, we need to determine how people should qualify, or if there is even a need to qualify. I’d like to start a discussion on the board regarding different ideas for qualification, and then put the top suggestions to a vote at the OAA Annual General Meeting on May 4th.
I propose one of the following three options, as a start:
Which option do you prefer? Do you have any other ideas on how to qualify pullers for the 2014 Nationals?
This change will allow sufficient space between the big events:
- Provincial Championships – early November
- Mike Gould Classic – late March
- National Championships – mid May
- World Championships – early-mid September

- No qualification criteria
- Must participate in at least one OAA event (sanctioned or circuit sanctioned) during the 2013/14 OAA season
- Must participate in at least two OAA events (sanctioned or circuit sanctioned) during the 2013/14 OAA season
