Record attendance made for a long day yesterday. In all, I believe there were 213 entries, breaking the Provincials attendance record set in 2011. I do not have the full results, but I hope they will be posted shortly.
These were the winners of the annual awards:
Promoter of the Year - Joey Costello and Ashley Maher
Rookie of the Year - Ashley Maher
Most Improved Puller - Tyler Robinson
Murray Park Memorial Sportsmanship - Craig Mitchell
Ironman - Kyle Kerswill
Male Puller of the Year - Shea Dickie
Female Puller of the Year - Linda deGroot
Team of the Year - Team Almighty
Ontario's Strongest Armwrestling Region - Central Ontario
Three people were inducted to the 2013 Ontario Armwrestling Hall of Fame - Kevin Kelly (Competitor), Garth Carlson (Competitor), and Lise Blanchard (Builder).
A few issues were voted on during the Annual General Meeting. The voting resulted in following decisions:
1) As there will not be another Ontario Provincial Championship prior to the 2014 Nationals, for 2014 only, the qualification criteria for attending Nationals will simply be that you must compete in at least one OAA event (either sanctioned or circuit sanctioned) over the course of the 2013-14 OAA season (i.e. at least one event between now and October 2014).
2) The OAA will enlist the services of Scott MacInnis of Armsport Videos to professionally film the next two Provincial Championships (up to and including the 2015 Provincials), with the video being posted online and free for all to see. The OAA will cover the cost of Scott's travel and accommodation arrangements. To help offset some of this cost, the price of an OAA Annual Membership will be raised to $35 as of 2014.
The location of the 2014 Provincials was voted on and they will be held in Scarborough. Mike Gould will host and the tentative date is November 8th, 2014.
Elections were held for four OAA Executive positions. The newly elected members of the Executive are
President - Joey Costello
Vice President - Dan Bellefeuille
Secretary-Treasurer - Lise Blanchard
Referee-in-Chief - Dave Campbell
The Director of Communications will soon be appointed by the newly elected Executive.
This week I will be making a final round of updates to the OAA website and then proceed to work with the new Executive to ensure a smooth transition.
I want to thank my Executive colleagues - Joe Gould, Mike Haigh, Dave Campbell, and Jason Manjin. I think we worked well together and took a lot of steps in the right direction over the past few years. I wish the new Executive well and hope that they will continue to build on the work we've done.
