Just a reminder that there is a kids tournament at this year's Provincials. There is no cost to participate, aside from the entry to the fair grounds. Classes will be determined on the day of the event, depending on participation.

The fair ground admissions are one of the ways that the fair can cover some of the costs it is incurring for the tournament. Without the fair's support, I would not be able to offer the prizes and classes that I am. I hope this will be okay with everyone. There has been armwrestling at the fair for close to 20 years, and this part of the agreement has always been the same.

I don't totally understand. What costs are they incurring from having the tournament? Besides the $1000?? How much do they get back just from anyone pulling or watching on top of buying anything else, food , games, ICE CREAM yum etc. At least half of the $1000 they will get back on admission fees alone just from OAA members/family/spectators pockets, minimum. I think the fair board is "dictating" and not "donating" jack sh%t. :)Having it on a Sunday, in Quebec is just too expensive, if you are traveling a long distance to have Monday off. I farm so it is worse than a pain in the ass. Also, I believe attendance will suffer a little because of it which means a little less revenue as well. I do not want to miss provincials. I did not speak up earlier, I doubt that would have mattered, but I thought I would throw my 2 cents in for future reference.

Having the tournament on a Sunday was definitely not my original intention, but I am trying to make the best of situation that isn't perfect. I realize and understand that there may be a negative impact with the tournament being held on a Sunday. I will be running two tables and the tournament will be done by 5pm, so almost everyone should be able to be home by midnight. Hopefully this will make the trip possible for most pullers.
The Gloucester Fair used to put in a lot of cash towards armwrestling -- in the neighbourhood of $7,500 per year. In the '90s, the Gloucester Fair tournament was the #1 pro-am event in Canada, and people would come from across the country to compete. However, in the early part of this decade attendance started to drop. The Fair changed locations about 10 years ago and fair attendance dropped significantly because it was harder to reach. There were also a few years of bad luck with poor weather which further impacted attendance. With less attendance, the Fair could no longer afford the same level of prizes, which had a spiral effect because fewer armwrestlers wanted to come for less prizes. Their contribution to the prizes all but disappeared last year. I was able to convince the Fair that attendance should be stronger this year because it is the Provincial Championships, but they were not comfortable committing the same amount of cash as in past years. Hopefully with a good turnout this year their faith in the event will be renewed and the event can prosper once again.

I hope you have a good turn out Eric. You are a great promoter of the sport. I know you do not want to discourage any potential entries by having it on a Sunday. You did ask and nobody said much so you just did what you had to do. I am not knocking you, just the situation you were put in and nobody including myself had any good input to throw in to change it. Sorry to throw this thread for a loop but buff started it!!
