Rick, In all sports now. Athletes are bigger, faster and stronger. There is more assistance provided to athletes through sports science and nutrition. Top athletes and their trainers know more now about the body then ever before. There is much more $$ in proffesional sports now, therefore more research has gone in to improve human performance... Including training methods. So yes, there might be some records that have stood the test of time. Yet hundreds have been crushed. It's simply evolution of man and science. Barry Bonds is a better athlete than Joe Dimaggio, Ovechkin is faster and stronger than Gretzky, Federer would smoke Lendyl, Bolt can run circles around Lewis and Devon can bring more tourque to the aw table then Cleve Dean ever could.

I'm far from an expert on the subject, but I thought I'd offer up an opinion anyway. I work long days, and have a young child at home, which does not leave a whole lot of time for the gym. What I have been doing over the past several months is trying to incorparate armwrestling specific exercises into my work day. For example if I were setting up scaffolding, I would have someone passing me sections and cupping around them and holding a hook position for 20-30 seconds while the next section is retrieved. Then of course theres always pull ups on the scaffold. I also use one of the heaviest hammers on the market, and I try to swing as quickly as possible to work on speed. Working on or around houses, or really anywhere else for that matter, I have found that with a little imagination you can come up with alot of ways to try to improve. It has slowly but surely been working for me. All that aside I still believe if I could get three or four nights a week for gym time my strength increase rate would sky rocket, but I'm trying to do the best with what I have. Also this one sounds real silly i guess but anytime i find myself just sitting around I'm usually locking my hands together and trying to work on hooks and toprolls. I know Joel Goodsell does this as well and look where he is in the sport lol.

Chris I have no intention of starting another arguement with you but Alex Ovechkin is actually in rather poor shape compared to most professional atheletes. but i do see what your saying

Athletes will evolve as time passes, and so will sports. It's the nature of things. There will always be rare cases like John Breznk, but look at Devon Laratt....John Breznk doesn't really like to lift weights...unless he does and he body doesn't look it. Look at what Devon did to him in their supermatch. Now I don't know much about this sport, but you could tell that all the best in the world are big dudes who hit the gym regularly. Look at Voevoda. Look at Taras. Look at Richard Lupkes. Look at Cyplenkov.

Give me an example of a strength sport where the records are significantly higher now than they were back in the '80s, or even the '70s... And please don't include powerlifting, that's all gear. I point out olympic lifting because it has more money and research behind it than any other strength sport and it is unaffected by advances in equipment. It was not "one record that stood the test of time"; since the late '70s, the best heavyweights in the world have been been lifting approximately 260kg in the clean and jerk, plus or minus 5 or 6kg, with the record of 266kg set in 1988. "Advances" in training have obviously not made much of an impact. You're muddying the water by including other professional sports in your analogy. Of course basbeball and hockey players are bigger nowadays, they've started weight training!

Welcome to the board Joey ;D Chris, by what standard are you saying that training is any better now than 20 or 30 years ago? In that time, raw powerlifting numbers haven't improved, the olympic lifting all-time clean and jerk record was set back in the '80s, and chemicals are the only reason bodybuilders are bigger now than Arnold was back in his prime... Arnold used to pop dbols and shoot test like he's going to die tmrw bro, hence the open heart surgery Sure, but not anywhere close to the amount the top guys take now... It`s in a whole other league entirely, and that`s why pro bodybuilders are so much bigger today. It`s not because they train smarter than Arnold and his peers did.

U make a good point Rick. And u could very well be right. I'm just not a beleiver. My money will always be on the scientific approach, which will constantly evolve.

I was a lumberjack in the bush for 13 years and now I'm a jackleg raise miner underground. Two extremely physical jobs. I dont workout.....and just learning to armwrestle. next weekend will be my first tournament. I will be a prime example of manual labour vs. weightlifters. My older brother weight lifts and is stong as hell......he hasnt beaten me in the last 16 years...I'm just sayin...lol.
