Well the Woodstock tourney is less than two weeks out and it looks like I am gonna have to lose a few to make the 176 class.
Just wondering what some of you guys do to cut weight before a tournament and not drain yourself in the process.

Moderate diet change, lighter foods, foods that do not take upwards of 6-8 hours to digest.

I would assume "lighter" foods would mean carbohydrates? I would actually recommend slashing carbs BIGTIME if you want to cut weight. Lots of sodium + sugar= big water retention. Replace with "heavy" foods like protein that take 6-8 hours to digest except the day of the tourny, night before, bump water intake bigtime, except the day of and night before cut it out completely untill after the weigh in and gobble up carbs bigtime after the weigh in. Small sips of water and tic tacs are good the day of the tourny untill weigh in. 5 to 8lb drop for most people

I've been cutting 10lbs for 154 classes for 6 years now. I got it down to an exact science (per my body). I've been very succesfull as my best performances have come in 154 classes opposed to 165..... And Mr Manjin IS SPOT ON! The only thing I ll add is keep protein high, but stay away from red meat 10-14 days prior to weigh in. As it will stay undigested in the intestinal track. The other key is to gradually increase intake of "metamucil". It will keep ur system clean as the dietary fibre becomes minimized as it parallels your low carb diet.

I ve done the garbage bag thing myself when I haven't had access to a sauna. Not fun... But highly effective.

Gobby and Manjin are spot on. The trick with protein intake is consume 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight per day. I've got down to 143 using this method.

Would people still try to cut weight as much if weigh-ins weren't scheduled until you were at the table for your first match (rather than an hour or two before - when you have a chance to "recover")?

Give it up old man . Boxing, MMA, wrestling, etc. All sports with weight classes, role the same way. Not to mention... In what you suggested, assume draw sheets are set and a puller is called up. But as he gets on scale, he is over. Does event have to stop while organiser re establishes the draw sheet?

For Olympic lifting, and I think powerlifting as well, they weigh you right after you set a record...

Weight cutting is a necessary evil when you are dealing with any sport that has weight classes. Anyone who doesn't try and cut a few lbs to be at the top of one weight class as opposed to the bottom of another is a little crazy, imo.
Anyway, thanks so much for all the good info guys! I will take the diet tips to heart and start with them right away.

all of the above work for me I eat well week before now, lots of water all week and, night of still drink till you go to bed stop eating 5-6 hours before bed. I wear a sweater and trac pants to bed with warm blankets and wake up 5-7lbs lighter clothing must breath well though so you don't over heat its slow easy and while you sleep lol. good or bad works for me. Now I live day to day 5lbs light or more and am good till I dicide to drop another weight class.

If there is no sauna, garbage bags are awesome, but I would not run, just go some where like your car, crank the heater and go for a drive, leave the window down a crack. Anything but exercise to shed the water. Gobby is right, Meta-mucil is awesome , it is good for you as well! USE IT! Because some guys are full of st more than others , , weight loss will vary! Just make sure you cut it out well enough before the tourny if you know what I mean!

I would assume "lighter" foods would mean carbohydrates? Negative lighter foods = VEGETABLES PEOPLE, definitely cutting carbs is necessary for the weight loss.

My Momma used to shout "Vegetables" too! As part of a long term diet and nutrition plan, vegetables are awesome. For a less than 2 week cut though(cutting weight for an event) metamucil will get you all the fibre of the vegetables and then some. Yes I know vegetables have alot of other benefits too but for the purpose in question not as effective. The "negative" food thing is way overdone as well. Some people would like you to believe that "negative" foods burn more calories that they have in them to digest! These foods are mainly fruits and vegetables. So if you are stranded on a desert Island with just these foods you would be better not to eat anything so you don't die as quickly! Check out negative foods on the net. Stuff like pineapples /oranges/ apples are on there too? Stefan, I am sure you have an awesome diet plan and negative foods should always be a part of a good balanced diet, but we are just talking about short term weight loss.(Mostly water) Vegetables are carbohydrates as well.(mostly fibre)
